Udaipur

Shimla

The former capital of British India, Shimla sits up in the foothills of the Himalaya between pine-clad ridges and snow-dusted peaks. The climate is milder than the scorching plains below, and the architecture hearkens back to the age of the Victorians. Chandigarh

Designed and planned by Le Corbusier in the 50s and 60s, Chandigarh's rose gardens and rigid blocks sit on the divide between the Himalayan foothills and the Indian plains. The city is a picture of efficiency, mixing brutalist concrete edifices with art-filled parks and cricket pitches. It's also a retail mecca, so be sure to bring your shopping hat!

Amritsar

The spiritual heart of the Sikh faith is the Golden Temple of Amritsar, where holy bathing pools and communal kitchens sprawl through the middle of the city. The town is also the hub of the Punjab, so get ready for heady bazaars packed with everything from street-food to Sikh trinkets and daggers.

Mysore

Mysore is the cultural epicentre of Karnataka state. The red-hued domes of the glittering Mysore Palace usually draw the eye. Ahmedabad
